A few days ago a very special event took place: the SharePoint Excellence Evening. It has been the first time (as far as I know) that three german SharePoint Usergroups (Stuttgart, Karlsruhe and Mannheim) organized a mutual event.

The idea behind this mutual event was born in summer 2012. At that time a colleague and I travelled by car from Karlsruhe to Stuttgart. We both have been asked to conduct a workshop at a customer’s site. During the trip we talked about ‘our’ usergroups and about joining our usergroups for a mutual meeting. It took several months before we finally have been able to push this idea into action.

The first SharePoint Excellence Evening took place in Stuttgart (May 14th, 2013) at the Maritim Hotel. Luckily we have been able to invite AvePoint and bridgingIT as sponsors for this event. With the help of both sponsors this evening had been free of charge for all attendees. At this point I would like to thank both sponsors for their generous support. Without their invaluable assistance we had not been able to organize this event.

Our first speaker had been Peter Fischer (Group Manager Business Productivity, Microsoft). He talked about SharePoint and Yammer and gave an valuable inside view into the future plans of Microsoft on how to integrate Yammer into SharePoint 2013 as an external social platform.

After Peter Fischer we had another well-known speaker: Michael Greth (Founder of the german He talked about the future of SharePoint and he also compared the development of SharePoint to the development of other Microsoft products and to former versions of SharePoint.

As third speaker I (Oliver Wirkus) had the privilege to talk about Collaboration with SharePoint 2013. I first gave a summary about what enterprises think about collaboration and how collaboration is used in an enterprise environment. After that I compared the collaboration features of SharePoint 2010 with SharePoint 2013. I ended my session with providing my best practices on how to implement a collaboration platform into an existing enterprise IT infrastructure.

Our fourth speaker had been Abi Onifade (Director, Systems Engineering EMEA at AvePoint). Abi showed us how to upgrade an existing SharePoint 2010 environment to SharePoint 2013. Abi not only used slides to show the migration process. He also fired up a virtual machine to show the migration process in a real-world example.

After the sessions there had been plenty of time for networking and to grab some of the tasty finger-food.

My personal résumé: the first SharePoint Excellence Evening had been a very interesting event with lots of valuable first-hand information about SharePoint. For the first time three SharePoint Usergroups organized a mutual event - and this kind of usergroup-event had been very successful. We had about 120 registrations, some well-known speakers, a pleasant ambiance - and the feedback from the attendees had been exceedingly affirmative. I think (and hope) that this wasn’t the last time a SharePoint Excellence Evening took place!
